South African Maskandi artist UMatollgate returns with ISIKHIYA SEMPILO, a deeply rooted traditional music project released on July 3, 2026, through Black Leopard Records.
Meaning “The Key of Life” in Zulu, ISIKHIYA SEMPILO reflects on faith, love, perseverance, and the realities of navigating life’s challenges. Across its seven tracks, UMatollgate combines meaningful songwriting with expressive vocal performances, creating a project that honors the traditions of Maskandi while remaining relatable to a modern audience.
Sonically, the album embraces the timeless essence of the genre through intricate acoustic guitar melodies, lively concertina rhythms, and the poetic delivery of izibongo. The production preserves the authenticity of traditional Zulu music while presenting it in a polished and engaging format.
