Zanefa Ngidi keeps the traditional Maskandi sound alive with “Awuthi Veku,” a vibrant collaboration featuring vocalist Phindile Buthelezi. Released on July 31, 2026, the song appears as the second track on his 5-track EP, Oshiphigwebu.

Running for 4 minutes and 7 seconds, the record moves with the fast-paced energy of traditional Zulu folk music. Intricate acoustic guitar patterns and rolling concertina rhythms provide the foundation, giving the song an unmistakable Maskandi character.

Ngidi brings his raw and energetic izibongo style to the performance, delivering rapid-fire praise chanting with plenty of personality. His approach is complemented by Buthelezi’s smoother, soaring vocals, creating a strong contrast between the two performers.

Their vocal chemistry gives “Awuthi Veku” an engaging dynamic. Ngidi drives the song with his commanding delivery, while Buthelezi adds melodic depth and a softer vocal texture that balances the arrangement.

The collaboration also marks Phindile Buthelezi’s first appearance on Oshiphigwebu. She returns later on the project’s closing track, “Happy Birthday,” making her a key part of the EP’s vocal lineup.

As the second track on Oshiphigwebu, “Awuthi Veku” delivers an energetic showcase of Maskandi tradition, combining expressive vocals, acoustic instrumentation, and the unmistakable rhythm of Zulu folk music.
